To begin Scripture memory with your child, choose one KJV Bible verse, read it aloud, repeat a short phrase together, and connect it to one ordinary moment. Start with love, courage, kindness, gratitude, strength, or guidance. A quiet minute while getting dressed can be enough to begin a conversation.
These six passages give you a place to start. You do not need to memorize all six in a week. Stay with one as long as your child enjoys it, and read the surrounding passage together so the words keep their meaning.
A simple routine for getting dressed
- Read. Say the verse slowly from your Bible. Explain one unfamiliar word.
- Repeat. Invite your child to echo a short phrase. Listening counts, too.
- Connect. Ask one question about the day ahead.
- Pray. Thank God for what you read and ask for help putting it into practice.
Try this in about 90 seconds when the morning allows it. If everyone is rushing, return to it at dinner or bedtime. This is an invitation to conversation, not a test.
1. Love: 1 John 4:19
“We love him, because he first loved us.”
Talk together: Who loved us first? What is one way we can show love to someone today?
This short verse points to God's love as the beginning of our response. Read 1 John 4:7–21 to explore how loving God connects with loving one another.
2. Courage: Joshua 1:9
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Talk together: What feels new or difficult today? What can we pray about together?
God spoke these words to Joshua as he prepared to lead Israel. Explain that “whithersoever” means wherever. Begin by repeating “Be strong and of a good courage,” then read the whole verse again.
3. Gratitude: Psalm 139:14
“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
Talk together: What is something about the way God made you that you can thank Him for?
In this psalm, David praises God for knowing him and making him. Explain “fearfully” here as a sense of wonder and reverence. Let your child answer in their own words.
4. Kindness: Ephesians 4:32
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.”
Talk together: Who could use a kind word today? What might forgiveness look like after an argument?
Act out a small moment: taking turns, speaking gently, or apologizing. Keep forgiveness connected to the verse's reminder of God's forgiveness in Christ.
5. Strength: Philippians 4:13
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Talk together: What is something hard that we can ask Christ to help us face?
Read Philippians 4:11–13 together. Paul is describing contentment in different circumstances. This verse points to strength in Christ; it is not a promise that we will win every game or get everything we want.
6. Guidance: Proverbs 3:6
“In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Talk together: What decision can we bring to God today?
Read Proverbs 3:5–6 together. “Acknowledge him” can begin with remembering God and seeking His wisdom. Ask your child to name one choice, such as how to treat a sibling or respond when something goes wrong.
Make the routine fit your family
For a child who is not reading yet, say one phrase and invite them to repeat it or listen. A child who reads can find the passage and lead the reading. If you use a shorter phrase, explain that it is part of a longer verse. Praise participation and curiosity instead of perfect recitation.
Keep the same verse for several days if that works for you. Return to its question later: “Did you find a chance to be kind?” A missed morning does not mean starting over.
Let a favorite shirt become a reminder
I AM KIDS creates Scripture-inspired Christian shirts for children. An animal or garden design can give you a familiar starting point: the I AM BRAVE Crab shirt points to Joshua 1:9, the Wonderfully Made Butterfly shirt to Psalm 139:14, and the I AM KIND Bee shirt to Ephesians 4:32.
The “I AM” messages are Scripture-inspired reminders; they are not always full, word-for-word Bible verses. Read the referenced passage with your child. You can use this routine with any outfit and a Bible.
